LIC- EFFECTIVE DEWORMING PRACTICE
Introduction.
Maintaining the health and productivity of livestock is a crucial aspect of successful agricultural operations. One key factor in livestock health is the management of internal parasites, commonly referred to as worms. This comprehensive approach outlines a multifaceted discipline to addressing the importance of worms in livestock, the need for laboratory fecal analysis and proper choices of the treatment. This improves deworming efficiency.
Understanding the importance of Worms in Livestock
From the LIC field experience, we have observed the following.
Young stock - Mortality, un-thriftiness, slow growth poor body condition, diarrhea, bottle jaw.
Adult- Reduce milk production in lactating cows and goats, reduced libido in breeding bulls and bucks, low conception rate, reduced wait gain in fattening bulls and susceptibility to other diseases.
The above issues have continued to remain a problem despite the current deworming interventions.
Accurate Deworming
Is a practice of screening before deworming
Objectives
- To determine the worm load
- To determine the worm species
- To determine the anti-helminthic efficacy of the drugs
